So when it comes to iPhone vs Android I am all about the iPhone. I've owned about 9 since its release in Australia and actually use the boxes they get sent in as storage in my room. I love the layout, I love iTunes and I love that it has become a part of me.
But then Ted started going on about how it is a closed network and reminded me of how frustrated I get when I need Flash and can't get it!! So I started thinking about Apple in general vs Google in general...
My chosen internet server is Google Chrome, my preferred search engine is Google, right now I'm blogging via Google's Blogger, I have had a Gmail account for about 6 years, I use Picasa to upload and edit pictures, I YouTube constantly as well as have my own channel, 3 of my group assignments are run through Google Docs and I have the Google places, Google+ and Google App all on my iPhone.
On the other hand...
I have a 30GB iPod 5th generation, an iPod shuffle 2nd Generation, an iPod nano 4th generation, iPod nano 6th generation, an original iPad, 2 iPhone 3, 4 iPhone 3GS, 3 iPhone 4 and am just waiting on iPhone 4S to be available in White. However, I am not a Mac user and I don't think I ever will be. I used a Mac one time in the computer lab and didn't know how to log off so I just remained logged in until the next person used it.
From my personal experiences, there doesn't seem to be a clear winner between Apple and Google, I use different things for different purposes, just like most people and I think that pitting them against each other and boycotting ones products and services out of loyalty to the other is silly. I am a happy customer of Google and Apple as a collaboration, perhaps I will send this post to Sergey, Larry and Tim Cook and see if they can set aside their differences and create an iDroid specially for me. They're pretty close to hybridding as it is:
I definitely agree about the reading. "Google's model is to build a killer app, then monetize it later". To me that summarises what the general opinion of Google is, in the Google v. Apple debate. Effectively arguing the Apple is all about making money, while Google aren't. Yes, Apple products are more expensive, but they work. Every single person I now who has owned a PC has had it go wrong. EVERYONE. Whereas people who have owned Apple products, the percentage is much smaller.
ReplyDeleteI think some computer users still have their first impressions of macs still in their heads. they are happy to use ipods and itunes, but shy away at the sight of a glossy macbook laptop or imac screen. I think if they sat down and had a bit of an explore into the capabilities of the system (like you have with all your ipods and phones), perhaps users will realise that its quite what they expected... its better.
ReplyDeletebut again, in the midst of the whole debate... its all up to the users.
At the end of the day it definately comes down to the user! I have used Macs before and can use them however I do definately prefer a PC computer. In saying this I do own an iphone and an ipod (which I dont even use).
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling that this debate of Apple vs Google will go on for some time but at the end of the day if they are both making money and selling their products does it really matter who 'wins'?
I don't think either company would win in this debate. These two companies are presenting us with two different options which accommodate different peoples wants. In my close group of friends I could clearly see the debate be played in front of my own eyes. A majority of my friends go for apple, which being a closed source is something that they desire. A minority of my friends are either left with HTC phones or Blackberry. Those that do have HTC phones were all/are I.T. students who do possess an interest in the provided open source that is being offered. And in no coincidence at all, my friends with IPhones all have Apple products (Laptop, Ipad, Ipod) whilst the others have a variety of sourced products. This philosophy war has a generated interest in who is better but for those few of us, all we care about is a phone which can call/text/internet and have facebook capabilities!
ReplyDeleteI think it all comes down to the user and their preference. If you read my blog you will see that I love my iphone but are in the same boat as you, I don’t think I could ever become a mac user/owner. I say this now but who’s to know how tempted I might be if a super cool mac comes out. I think a hybrid would be the best option because neither is ever going to win the debate. There seems little point when they are both making squillions of dollars.
ReplyDeletefreedom over comfort anyday!.. if i ever went back to an iphone i would jailbreak it straight away. Hate having to use a device the way someone wants me to use it.
ReplyDeleteI like your point about people missing out on the pro's of another type of technology because they are to "loyal". All the technology is there to be used and taken advantage of so you should utilise it.
ReplyDeleteI also feel that Apple is more about the money and i think that that their days may be number at the top of the chain. Google seem to have out played them by getting on-board with pretty much all the leading hard ware makers of phones and dump their excellent software product, that pretty much will only get better over time to make market leading smart phones. I agree with Ted when he says apple is a closed system.
